Recipe - De-Stress for Less

This was my entry into the recent Beauty Heaven Blogstar competition.  It didn’t win me any awards, :-<  LOL!  :))  But, I did enjoy re-living my relaxing experience as I was working on this post and also the topic is completely different to any of my previous blogs, so all in all I had fun stepping out of my comfort zone and running around naked....(well, not quite, hehe! ;)) but you know what I mean ;)  )

As a WAHM rearing two hardheads (rug rats/toddlers), days off are scarce and ‘me’ time is a rare amenity. Last weekend, the youngsters stayed overnight at their grandparents, leaving me home alone with a hunger for some long-awaited pampering. I cooked myself the ‘order of the day’, to tantalise my senses, before serving up a welcoming slice of repose!

Ingredients:

Scented Candle
Epsom Salts/Baking Soda
Aromatherapy Oils
Body Wash/Scrub
Shampoo/Conditioner/Treatment Mask
Cleanser/Cleansing Devise
Facial Mask
Body Moisturiser
Foot Lotion
Cotton Socks
Hand Cream
Lip Balm

Method:

1. In the bathroom, create sensual aroma and atmosphere with a calming Scented Candle, transitioning you from tense to tranquil and evoking a serene, peaceful ambiance.
I used:  Ecoya Soy Wax Candle Everyday Tin in French Pear.

2. Run a luxury-healing bath, infused with Epsom Salts and Baking Soda to flush toxins and relieve tired, overworked muscles. Assist the detox by adding Aromatherapy Oils. Soak your cares away, stimulating circulation, easing tension and reducing stress for improved well-being.

3. Bathe your body using an ambrosial Body Wash.

Slough away dead skin cells and restore the smooth factor with a deep cleansing, exfoliating Body Scrub.

A Pumice Stone softens rough areas on your heels and toes.

4. Use a luscious Shampoo and Conditioner to achieve smooth, soft locks, which smell fabulous.

Boost your tresses with a Treatment Mask, promoting moisture, strength and flexibility.

5. Cleanse your face to purify the skin and target individual concerns.

Implement a complimentary Cleansing Device that enhances your cleanser, prompting a thorough, deep–pore clean and optimal skin health.

6. Apply an embellishing Facial Mask to balance, comfort and repair skin, whilst eliminating impurities. Kick back, chill out and drift away restfully, as it performs its magic.

7. After the indulgent bath, massage a rich, replenishing Body Moisturiser into damp skin, encouraging better absorption, keeping moisture locked in.

Treat your feet and soothe your soles with a mint-enriched Foot Lotion that refreshes skin and increases circulation.

Slipping on Cotton Socks encourages fancy feet, plus keeps them sweet.

8. Complete your regular facial care regime, before nurturing your hands with a succulent, remedial Hand Cream.

Finally, extend the TLC to your kissers, with a slick of nourishing Lip Balm.
I used:  Dermalogica Age Smart Renewal Lip Complex

Ahh, that rest stop left me rejuvenated and blissfully at ease. If life becomes hectic or you’re flirting with stress, remember to call time-out before you burnout. Do you have a special remedy for respite?

Treatment Products – Uneven Skin Tone!

Still focusing on the products that I use to maintain my Serious Skin Care routine, these treatment products, which I don’t consider to be essential, yet still extremely beneficial, target my motley complexion, age spots and general skin health.  Apart from the joys of being ‘blessed’ with oily skin, my uneven skin tone would have to be the primary skin concern that I have battled for the majority of my adult life. ~X(  I have tried numerous products over the years, which all claim to address the problem, most of which were unsuccessful, so I will concentrate on the two products that I have used over the longest period, one of which I regard as being far more effective than the other.  Both however, have paved the way to my skin looking and feeling better than ever before! :)

Ultraceuticals Even Skintone Serum

ABOUT:
I originally started using the ‘Pharma’ version of the Ultraceuticals Even Skintone Serum (now discontinued) but found it was not having much effect on my skin so I stepped up to the ‘Professional’ version.  I used it every morning for 18 months, as a regular step in my daily skin care regime.  I preferred to use it of a morning, in conjunction with my Topical Vitamin C and regular basic three-step skin care regime, Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising, because I prefer not to use it at night, in case it might jeopardise the efficacy of my Topical Vitamin A treatment, which I use of a night. ;)

The first thing I noticed about the serum is that it doesn't have the nicest scent, but I can bare with unusual smells, if it teams up with a formula that actually works. :P  Some of the best products I have ever used don’t smell that pleasant, so in my opinion effectiveness wins hands down over fragrance. @};-  It comes in a bottle with a dropper-style lid to easily disperse the serum.  I squeeze about 4 drops of the serum onto my fingers, which is plenty to work right into my skin. I gently press it all over my face, rather than rub it on, that way it can soak into my skin, instead of running the risk of possibly rubbing it off.  :-O  This serum is very economical, as a full bottle lasts me for around 10 months, and even though it appears to be expensive initially, when you consider how long it lasts, with frequent daily use, it is certainly value for money. (*)

MY EXPERIENCE:
When I first began using the serum, upon application I would notice a slight tingling sensation, however over time I didn’t notice it at all, nor did it ever irritate my sensitive skin.  The texture of the serum is somewhat oily, but even though it appears greasy when first applied, it fortunately doesn’t make my already oily skin all greasy.  In fact, because it absorbs quickly and it doesn’t offer enough hydrating properties on its own, I still need to use a moisturiser after the serum.  I have tried it without a moisturiser, and while it isn’t drying at all, it just doesn’t deliver enough hydration to warrant skipping this step, which because of my oily complexion, I can occasionally get away with, when using certain serums.  :)>-

It is hard to describe what it actually does for my skin, as it’s hard to pinpoint any specifically noticeable skin changes, even after the 18 month duration, but there were definitely some overall beneficial improvements.  My skin no longer appeared blotchy, even though it didn’t completely even out my skin tone, it was still significantly better than it was previously.  It also slightly reduced the flushed red appearance of my skin slightly and the texture was much softer and smoother.  I didn’t seem to breakout as often either, as my skin is was less congested and it worked wonders at keeping the excess oil production at bay.  :D

OVERALL:
In general, I found my skin looked and felt extremely healthy, imparting an all over naturally radiant glow. I think the Ultraceuticals Even Skintone Serum would be ideal for anyone who has oily or sensitive skin, especially those who suffer from uneven, red, blotchy skin with mild to moderate pigmentation, because with regular use, over time it helps to deliver a more refined, polished looking complexion.
:)>-

Medik8 White Balance

ABOUT:
I initially tried this product as a replacement to the skin tone serum I had previously used, which worked satisfactorily, but being the skin care junkie that I am, I felt the need to search for something even better.  :-j  I have become really fond of this serum, because not only not only is more affordable than its predecessor, it also produces results that I can actually see. \:D/  I had never heard of Medik8 prior to this, but was keen to give it a try as I learned it was actually a ‘Green’ cosmeceutical skin care brand, which is just as powerful as traditional cosmeceuticals and also perfect for those with sensitive skin.  The Medik8 White Balance, a unique highly concentrated, active serum, has no Hydroquinone or Kojic Acid (acid or bleach), therefore no irritation or toxicity, making it extremely appealing to me. :x

Presented in a small bottle with a dropper-style lid for application, I only need two drops per morning, which is sufficient to treat my whole face.  It is a clear, extremely lightweight serum and not at all greasy, which absorbs into my oily skin instantly leaving no tacky residue.  It is also a nourishing formulation, which delivers extra moisture, rather than leaving my skin feeling dry and parched.  I have never experienced any sign of the dreaded stinging sensation or tingling often associated with many skin-lightening treatments, so I believe it is gentle and safe enough to use on even the most sensitive of skins. ;)

MY EXPERIENCE:
Within weeks of using this serum daily, I noticed changes in my complexion that were not evident, even after long-term use, with my previous even skin tone serum.  So not only is this serum super effective it works fast to provide definitive noticeable results. =D>  I also like that whilst this serum repairs existing skin damage, it is also ideal to use post sun exposure to help prevent the onset of future skin discolouration. :)

In just a few short months, my complexion is uniform; the texture is soft and smooth and my skin is luminous and literally glowing with health.  I love this skin-correcting treatment because after years of neglecting my skin, it was beginning to show the all too familiar telltale signs of sun damage, leaving me with a discoloured, uneven skin tone with patches of pigmentation and general facial redness.
:-S   No product I tried seemed to work completely, regardless of the various claims and promises they would always make. Yet with the Medik8 White Balance, after only one four weeks, I could already see a likeness of this brand spanking new skin.  \:D/

OVERALL:
This serum has given my skin back a hint of youthfulness, which is extremely impressive.  My facial redness has diminished, and my complexion is vibrant and so healthy.  I constantly recommend the Medik8 WhiteBalance to anyone who has battled with pigmentation or a mottled, uneven skin tone and those who are sick of trying products that just don’t live up their claims!  I suggest investing in some of this wonder serum and after just four weeks, you will be pleasantly surprised with the outcome and will never have to look back. This is definitely the best illuminating, skin brightening serum around; it has totally exceeded all of my expectations. <:-P

Well yep, that is the gist of it pretty much, as I mentioned, while these treatment products, aimed at my uneven skin tone, are not essential for my daily skin care routine, their addition does give a bit of extra oomph and make my skin look alive, helping to reduce the unflattering, deteriorating ravages of time.  :D  These products give me hope and make me feel like I am the one in control of my skin, fully loaded and ready to tackle the visible signs of ageing, to ensure optimal skin heath, so I can sport a younger-looking complexion with the clear, beautiful skin I always wished I could have.  [-O<  Do you use any treatment products in conjunction with your normal skin care routine, if so what are your major skin concerns and how do you target them?

Sun Protection - Staring ‘Oily Skin’

Hi there my peeps, after the mayhem of the past few weeks, due to an overloaded personal/professional life, I am back on track, so its about time I get my butt into gear and finish off what I started here. :-w  I am referring to my personalised skin care products, which coincides with my Serious Skin Care program, giving y’all a rundown on the secret weapons I use regularly, to maintain my ultimate anti-ageing skin care regime.  So far, I have covered  the basic three-step skin care routine of Cleansing, Toning and Moisturising, followed by Vitamin Therapy – Topical Vitamin A and C, so now I am moving onto a subject that I have developed a love/hate relationship with over the years, Sun Protection.  Yep, finding an effective sunscreen has always been a challenge, because most formulations are too rich and heavy, causing a greasy, shiny mess, which is that oily in fact, you could fry and egg on it, EEK!  :-S  That much excess oil causes sunscreen to pretty much slide straight off, rather than staying put to perfect the job at hand.  Not to mention, mismatched sunscreens also lead to congestion, generating breakouts or even worse provoking irritations and unsightly rashes.  :|  Trying to attempt wearing makeup in conjunction with the unsuitable sunscreens was an even bigger nightmare, because after a couple of hours (if that) not only would I lose the sunscreen, I also had to kiss my makeup goodbye as well. ~X(   Arghhh, Not Happy Jan! LOL ;)

These days, though, I have finally nailed my ideal sun protection products that compliment and support my oily complexion, instead of always enduring the former disappearing act that defeated the purpose of using sunscreen the first place.  I thought those side effects would always be part and parcel of safeguarding my oily skin. :-<  Wrong, after deciding that enough was enough and I didn’t want to persevere with looking like I belong in the deep fryer any longer, research led me to a greater knowledge of products that might accommodate my oily skin; what a relief I was finally on the right track.  #:-S   Naturally, like with any skin care product, it all comes down to trial and error and I have tried my fair share of sunscreens that claim to be fitting for oily skin, yet within hours an onset of the ghastly slick would surface, noooooo!   :(  Still to this day, I can count on less than 10 fingers, the number of sunscreen products I have tried that actually work and work well, minus the grungy onslaught I use to dread.  Here are the progressive products I am referring to, the ones that work, which I regularly use, as well as those that perform unchallenged and unrivaled, beyond conviction; I know I can rely on any of these SPF products to satisfy my oily skin needs. (*)

This is different to any other SPF moisturiser I have tried, EVER!  So, what is different about this one?  Lots, it’s lightweight, non-whitening, water resistant, touch dry and ultra sweat resistant. With the extreme humidity, here in Far North Qld, I always battle with sunscreens sweating off, well not anymore! Phew  #:-S  This one actually stays put and I love that it comes in a low irritant, non-greasy formula that doesn’t seem to clog my pores or contribute to any breakouts.  While my sun protection preference is usually zinc, with its physical barrier, unfortunately the options are limited when it comes to finding a decent, formula, developed into a light enough cream for daily use underneath makeup.  I normally avoid chemical sunscreens, because they bring back memories of nothing but grief; however, I was surprised to find this chemical version is so complimentary and kind to my skin, that all reservations aside, I have instead, embraced its efficacy.  >:D<

This multi-tasking trifecta combines a moisturiser, antioxidant and sunscreen, boasting five, non-nano, broad-spectrum protection filters that absorb both UVA and UVB rays like a force field, before they can cause any damage.  The skin preserving antioxidants are beneficial in the fight against skin ageing and may reduce the risk of certain sun cancers. What’s more, it is water resistant for up to four hours, so I can enjoy water activities, like swimming, without worrying that my skin is exposed. \:D/   If you have an oily or combination skin type this is an ideal daily moisturiser for you, provided you don’t have any issues using chemical sunscreen filters.

I have been using the Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF30+ since it was first released, on a regular basis and I am impressed with its incredible staying power. My face is indefinitely matte after application and remains like that for the duration of the day, without any sign of that pesky shine.  Presented in a handy pump bottle, just two small squirts, delivers enough weightless, creamy fluid to evenly cover my entire face and neck. It blends well and melts away to nothing within seconds, leaving my face prepped, adequately protected and ready for my makeup application.  Overall, this is one of the best sun protection products I have tried that addresses oily skin, in addition to ALL of my regular skin concerns as well, without any notable cons. =D>  (Other than my own conscience reminding me that it’s still a chemical sunscreen, @-)  LOL).
Before and after applying to skin.

I even find the title is very fitting too, as it has become a ‘Daily Essential’ step in my skincare regime.  When Alpha-H developed this SPF moisturiser, I am sure they specifically knew all about my skin care woes, haha  :)) It targets each of my individual sunscreen dilemmas, whilst it also represents and acknowledges an awareness of our humid weather conditions, conformed with its unique ‘Australian friendly’ formulation.  I have never found an SPF moisturiser with the unsurpassed qualities of the Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF30+, which literally runs rings around its competitors with performance capabilities alone.  I rate it as a 4 ½ star creation out of 5, which only loses the ½ star because it’s not a physical sunscreen (See there I go again, damned integrity, =)) ROFL).  Maybe I might drop a hint to Alpha-H, claiming I would love them forever if they could possibly unite the superior advantages of a physical. zinc-based sunscreen, with the competence of the Alpha-H Daily Essential Moisturiser SPF30+'s unique, breakthrough formula, to cater for us chemical sunscreen snobs, haha. >:/   Honestly though, at the end of the day, I am thankful for such an awesome SPF moisturiser that is a pleasure to use, which exceeded my expectations, ten fold, despite my initial reluctance and scepticism.  :)>-

Until about 12 months ago, this WAS my ‘Holy Grail’ sun protection product.  What’s changed? Well as I pointed out in my Top 10 Award post, I found out that my ‘be all and end all’ was in fact somewhat of a fraud. :-O  Initially, I was extremely disappointed and as a consumer, I felt deceived and misled, no thanks to the deluding information available on the brand website and product packaging, giving the impression that it’s an all natural blend, with 18% zinc oxide minerals, along with two preservatives. :-L  There is nothing ANYWHERE on the packaging or website suggesting that it has any other ingredients infused in the formulation, whereas other declarations presented in capital letters, stating ‘No Chemical Absorbers’ for example, are blatantly obvious for all to see.  I would imaging that to the average 'Jo Blow', a statement of that nature would have them assuming, it’s a natural product without harmful ingredients, like chemicals etc on board, just mineral zinc and a pair of preservatives, that is it.  :-??

The packaging details.
It bugs the life out of me, when I come across, company after company, resorting to the clever use of crafty wording and purposely withholding the factual product details when advertising their brands.  This kind of marketing, always gives me a hunch that they are intentionally misrepresenting the truth. [-X  Due to such loose labelling regulations, here in Australia, it’s not a requirement for certain products, such as sunscreens, to disclose ALL of their ingredients.  Therefore, as consumers, we are often none the wiser. :-/  In other countries, these regulations are much tighter, so if the companies in question wish to sell their products abroad they DO have to comply with those particular countries laws.  In this case, after a bit of online probing I soon found the entire list of Invisible Zinc Tinted Daywear SPF30+ ingredients, confirming the earlier allegations that I had learned about.  Considering there is over a dozen OTHER ingredients, most of those I can’t even pronounce, certainly validates their marketing tactics are not aimed at raising consumer awareness. [-(  It’s just the opposite, the joke is on us, the oblivious consumers who are frequently sucked in, time and time again, being wrongfully fooled by this untoward, yet common form of deception.  L-)

This discovery was the pits to be honest and for a while, I actually boycotted the product all together, refusing to touch it. :-t  Mostly because I felt used, abused and feeling the fool. :">  Over the following month or so, I conducted numerous internet searches, trying to find an alternative, void of nasties, but had little success; much to my dismay, there are very few unsuspecting, trustworthy, zinc-based sunscreens around.  Anyhow, in time I eventually returned to my ‘old faithful’ after coming to terms with the reality that I had never actually experienced any complaints at all, when I used the product. *-:)  One would think that a 3-year period would be sufficient to determine any problems, which would have surely reared their ugly head, if that were the case.  However, I didn’t experience anything even remotely negative, in terms of side effects.  Additionally, if I were none the wiser to the information uncovered, I would have continued on my merry way, singing its praise, as I always did.  With that said, an old saying came to mind, ‘If it ain't broke, don't fix it!’  Well, bearing in mind that I was impressed with the results I had previously achieved using Invisible Zinc Tinted Daywear SPF30+ and without a worthwhile replacement in sight, I had to take it or leave it.  I opted for the latter.  [-O<  Due to it’s physical zinc-based properties, it still remains my sunscreen of choice.  Because it sits on top of my skin reflecting any harmful rays before they cause any damage, which unlike chemical sunscreens, that enter into your skin, there is less chance of developing any conflicts like allergies and irritations that are sometimes associated with chemical penetration.  It is also a known fact that Zinc Oxide offers the best of both UVA and UVB protection, so it made sense to stick with it, especially for occasions where I was exposed to direct sunlight, i.e. a day at the beach.  B-)
Before and after applying to skin.
Invisible Zinc Tinted Daywear SPF30+ has remarkable coverage for a tinted moisturiser and it doesn’t cause my oily skin to develop into a grease ball after a few hours.  It’s a multi-tasker, combination tinted moisturiser/sunscreen providing a natural tint with a matte-like finish with additional anti-ageing benefits. Despite claims that it contains pore-clogging ingredients, I have never suffered from congestion and like how it keeps my skin nourished with increased hydration.  Finding such a decent tinted moisturiser that harmonised with my skin, empowered me, for the first time in my life, to scrap my full coverage foundation during the day (something I would have never dreamed of doing before, it's like being naked :-O LOL).  I can instead, apply the Invisible Zinc Tinted Daywear SPF30+ with a bit of concealer and a light dusting of translucent powder and be confident that my imperfections are disguised, without the need for loads of makeup.  Furthermore, the frequent application of topical zinc to my skin, has over time, improved the overall condition of my skin, preventing the onset of pimples and breakouts, leaving my complexion healthy and clear. :)

The formula, while very thick, takes some getting use to, but its actually rather lightweight, non-greasy and is easy to spread and blend, remembering that you don’t need much.  Begin with a small pea-sized amount, adding more as required until you achieve your desired, natural-looking effect.  The thick texture contributes to a slightly tacky feel for the first couple of minutes, but setting it with a powder helps to accomplish a flawless, shine-free finish, minus the ghostly white cast often left by certain sunscreens.  It’s a perfect solution to contend the conditions of our humid, tropical climate and even on the hottest summer days I can use it of a morning and know it’s not going to budge at all. ;)  Because of the impeccable staying power, it can often be difficult to remove with a normal cleanser, so based on my own experience I have determined that either an oil-based cleanser to break it down or a deep pore cleanser, such as an AHA formulation will dispel the normally stubborn remnants with ease.  The most important acknowledgement though, is that I have never sustained even a touch of sunburn, since introducing the Invisible Zinc Tinted Daywear SPF30+, to my daytime routine.  It really does impart the ultimate barrier between my skin and the sun to safeguard against its damaging UV rays.  =D>  I am the first to admit I am not thrilled about the realisation of the included hidden nasties, after I already had developed a love affair with the product. =((  For now though, I am comfortable enough to keep plugging on with it until a better option comes along. :)  If anyone can suggest a decent zinc-based sunscreen, I would love to hear about it.

My other Staunch SPF Products - Tried, Tested and Deemed Suitable for Oily Complexions (by yours truly)

Ultraceuticals Protective Daily Moisturiser SPF30+ - This is a creamy, lightweight, non-greasy, age defying moisturiser with the bonus of antioxidant goodies to combat free radical damage and a high SPF rating, consisting of both chemical and physical sunscreens. It combats dehydration and delivers a superb matte finish.
Before and after applying to skin.

Kosmea Moisturising Lotion SPF30+ - This lightly textured, delicately scented, oil-free moisturiser has excellent sun protection properties incorporating both physical and chemical technology, targeting prematurely ageing skin to promote a healthy, youthful complexion.  Featuring some super beneficial all natural ingredients, and no nasties, it’s everything like a gorgeous nourishing lotion and nothing like a sunscreen.
Before and after applying to skin.

Burts Bees Radiance Day Lotion SPF30+  - Infused with a subtle, sweet fruity fragrance the lightweight, ultra delicate, cream absorbs super fast with no greasy residue. The airy texture provides a matte finish and it remains shine-free all day, while the natural ingredients enhance the skins radiance and rejuvenate the complexion. It offers an adequate chemical and physical combination sun protection in a non-typical sunscreen formula that doesn’t leave a white cast on the skin.
Before and after applying to skin.

Laura Mercier Oil Free Tinted Moisturiser SPF20 – This is a tinted moisturiser with a difference, providing super staying power and a fresh, dewy finish in a non-greasy formulation. It has a thick foundation-like texture, but blends with ease to achieve a the fullest sheer coverage tinted moisturiser I’ve ever seen, which is also buildable for extra concealment of any stubborn imperfections, ensuring an evenly toned, healthy, natural looking complexion. The one downfall is that I wouldn’t be inclined to reply it as my sole sun protection product because the chemical sunscreens, unfortunately don’t offer broad spectrum protection, so I like to use it in conjunction with another form of protection.
Before and after applying to skin.

Mukti Botanicals Tinted Moisturiser SPF15 – This non-nano, chemical-free, zinc-based tinted moisturiser offers decent physical protection, in an all-natural formula, that instantly sparked my attention.  It has a slightly herbal aroma and the texture, whilst thin and lightweight, is probably slightly too rich for my oily skin, due to the enticing blend of nourishing ingredients, which tends to get a bit shiny during the day. My other dilemma is the coverage is basically nada, it’s so sheer it’s invisible, therefore makes for a great base, preferably under a dusting of mineral powder foundation. Unfortunately, it doesn’t hide my flaws or even out my skin tone, so I dare not use it alone without the security of at least some extra cover.  10/10 for coming real close to the physical protection solution I am looking for.  ;)
Before and after applying to skin.

Philosophy Supernatural Oil-Free Tinted Foundation PrimerSPF 15 – This primer literally blew me away, it totally exceeded my expectations, as never have I tried a tinted primer, much less one that also has the benefits of broad spectrum chemical and physical sun protection properties.  It’s silky smooth in texture with added silicones that magically transform my complexion, evening the tone and hiding the imperfections for a flawless finish. My skin looks amazing BEFORE I have even applied any foundation. It keeps my makeup in place and looking matte all day, definitely the best primer I have tried to date. :x  I am sceptical on the effectiveness of the SPF, however, so if heading outdoors I just apply additional sun protection to be certain.
Before and after applying to skin.

Whoa, :-" that was one heck of a mouthful if I do say so myself, LOL. :)) Nevertheless, if you think about it, that is only eight sun protection products that I highly regard as worthy of recommendation to my fellow oily skinned sisters.  Over the duration of my thirty odd years, I constantly searched for a pertinent safeguard, in alliance with the ongoing Aussie health campaign I evolved with, 'Slip, Slop, Slap'.  Yet pinpointing the right sunscreen was never an easy feat, for someone with oily skin.  I learned quick smart that oily skin and sunscreen do not readily unite.  One fail would usually lead to another and then another and so forth, so having established eight amazing sun protectors that DO synthesise in accordance with my oily complexion is quite an achievement for me, hehe.  ;)) Seriously, you probably won’t believe this, but it has only been during the past four years or so that I have established every one of my SPF staples, when I finally got my skin professionally analysed and was educated about products and ingredients that compliment my skin type.  Prior to that, I was constantly at war with my skin, due to misuse of incompatible skin care products, so slapping on any old sunscreen didn’t do me any justice, and needless to say none of the products from the past three decades are still with me today, haha.  :))  Do you have problems finding a sunscreen product, which is compatible with your skin type?  Do you have any favourites you might care to share?  Hit me with your suggestions, I’m all ears.  :)

Vitamin Therapy - Topical Vitamin C

Hi, y’all!  Well this is rolling right along now, with this second instalment, of my Vitamin Therapy process, following my previous Vitamin Therapy – Topical Vitamin A post.  Vitamin Therapy is the nickname I am using to portray this integral step, incorporated in my Serious Skin Care routine.  It involves integrating topical vitamins into my daily beauty ritual.  Not only are oral vitamins good for our inner health, when applied topically, they are fundamental in the care of our skin, keeping it in prime condition whist encouraging a more youthful appearance.  This dyad of conventional vitamins have evolved in recent times, into orthodox treatment methods, widely proclaimed as two of the most accomplished, scientifically proven antioxidant vitamins for reducing the negative effects of free radical damage to the skin, while being highly regarded as extremely influential factors of modern anti-ageing skin care.  Research has also claimed these antioxidants, when administered topically, can also yield significant protection for the skin and are capable of revoking the inevitable, somewhat sombre, circumstances surrounding the process of becoming older.  >:/

Vitamin Therapy Part 2 highlights my approach and understanding of topical Vitamin C, which perfectly compliments my Serious Skin Care regime and targets my own individual gremlins >:) (skin concerns, LOL :)) ).  I will run-through the Vitamin C skin care products that I have selected to flatter my straightforward anti-ageing routine and share my perceptions, based on my personal experience.

So, What is topical Vitamin C??

It is one of the best antioxidant vitamins, amidst considerable documented evidence supporting its effectiveness on the skin.  Up until 4 years ago, I knew absolutely nothing about Vitamin C whatsoever, :-/ (other than the memories of those yummy bright orange chewable tablets associated with my childhood, 8-> hehe ;)) ) until my beauty therapist boasted about how good it was.  She talked of its ability to boost collagen production, reverse the damage to skin cells and tissues, counteract premature signs of ageing, such as wrinkles, pigmentation and sagging caused by free radical assault.  She claimed it was one of her own secret anti-ageing weapons and one look at her gorgeous skin was enough to make me stand at attention, LOL. :))  Considering my skin, at the time, was evidently advertising numerous symptoms of premature ageing caused by sun damage thanks to my neglectful younger years. [-X  :">  Therefore, it was only fitting that I wanted to jump straight on the Vitamin C bandwagon myself. >:/ Three years on as I continue to watch my skin recover and emend before my very eyes, I can admit I have grown particularly attached to my Vitamin C skin care ‘sweetheart’ :x ;;)  Along with Topical Vitamin A, I plan to post a blog exploring topical Vitamin C, in depth as a skin care ingredient, further down the track.  However, this blog focuses on products rather than ingredients as such, so I will just include a snippet from the Beautypedia website, for a brief explanation in technical terms, FYI!

One of the most well-researched vitamins for skin, vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that has multiple benefits for those concerned with reducing (or forestalling) the signs of aging. It is available in many forms, with ascorbic acid being the most common (although it is the least stable, so packaging to ensure potency of such products is a major concern). Stabilized forms of vitamin C include magnesium ascorbyl phosphate, L-ascorbic acid, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate, ascorbyl palmitate, ascorbyl glucosamine, and ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate.

And, Why use it?

Efficacious amounts of topical vitamin C (typically 2–10%) have been shown to increase collagen production (including dermal collagen, which is significant for wrinkle reduction), reduce the appearance of skin discolorations, strengthen skin's barrier response, enhance skin's repair process, reduce inflammation, and help skin better withstand exposure to sunlight, whether protected by sunscreen or not.

What am I using?

I have been using this particular serum for about 12 months now, after discovering it was an affordable alternative for the Alpha-H Vitamin C 20% Serum that I formerly used. $-) After a thorough comparison of the two products, I decided that the ASAP Vitamin C Serum was the more beneficial option for my skin.  While both products are of a serum formulation, the ASAP Vitamin C Serum was of a slightly higher strength, with a 23% concentration compared to the 20% of its predecessor.  Unfortunately, since I started writing this post, I have ascertained that it has been recently discontinued!  :-O  Despite its demise, it has paved way for the innovative ASAP Super C Serum, which superseded the original.  Hmm :-? another brand spanking, shiny new product to tempt me with. @-) haha :)) Oh well, I think I can see my wishlist growing LOL :)) Because this could possibly be an option when my existing one runs out. ;)  Even though I am uncertain what Vitamin C product I will engage in next, I was OK discerning that I won't be able repurchase this serum anymore.  Because honestly, while it DOES work, it really didn’t snag my ‘Holy Grail’ caliber ^:)^ and I will explain why, directly.

Presented in a 30ml durable white glass bottle, featuring a hygienic dropper-style lid, to help the ingredients remain stable and prevent oxidisation.  Like many Vitamin C skin care products, this serum is tinted, which I find annoying! 8-| It’s impossible to tell if the Vitamin C becomes unstable when infused in a tinted formula, whereas with an untinted version, you could look for a change in the colour to tell if it has gone bad.  Anyway, I have not yet had much luck in finding too many serums that are not tinted, which is a shame, as the product would be deemed useless if it isn’t stable, sigh! :-< The cream and powder versions though, are often white in colour, if they are suited to your personal preference. *-:) The ASAP Vitamin C Serum is of an orange/brown colour, which smells slightly citrus-like, but it’s very subtle and doesn’t linger on the skin once it has been applied.

On the back on my hand ;)
After application on the back of my hand

I always fear that serums might be rich and greasy on my oily skin, :-S but thankfully, this one is ultra lightweight and absorbs well.  Initially, it does make my skin feel tacky to some extent, but once it dries, there is no evidence of any residue left on my skin at all.  I use it daily in my morning skin care ritual and it doesn’t interfere with my regular makeup application, which I just apply as normal after using the serum and a moisturiser.  I can also vouch that this serum DOES NOT stain the skin on my face. (Thank heavens, #:-S  LOL :)) ) Funnily enough, when I first started using it, I couldn’t help but notice the brown stain transferred on the palm of my hand, :-O LOL. :))  This stain didn’t wash off easily with water either, eek :-O so I began getting paranoid that if it was staining my hand so evidently, then what must it be doing to my face? double eek!!! :-O :-O I pictured myself resembling an ‘oompa loompa’ but luckily, after close and careful scrutiny in the mirror, I was finally convinced that my facial skin was, in reality NOT stained at all, phew  #:-S  After that encounter, I proceeded in dropping the serum onto the flipside of my hand, rather than its palm, and, remarkably, no sign of any staining there either, hooray =D>  Looks like this ASAP Vitamin C Serum only objected to submerging into the skin on my palm, rebelling in nature, forever stamping its mark in the form of that unsightly, stain.  Which I might add, doesn’t leave much to the imagination, bwahaha ROFL =)) but hey, as long as it stayed on my palm and didn’t obviously recur on my face; then I could live with that ;)
On the palm of my hand :-O

All I ever need is just a tiny bit of serum per application, say 2- 3 drops, which is sufficient to then transfer onto my hand, (remember, not on the palm, LOL :)) ) before gently working into my skin.  I have never endured any stinging, burning or tingling sensation after using this serum, although I presume that may be because my skin was already quite resilient from various other Vitamin C products, I previously used.  Additionally, the ASAP Vitamin C Serum has never contributed to breakouts or irritation, so even though it is possibly the highest strength OTT (Over the counter) topical Vitamin C product available, it was perfectly kind to my sensitive skin. :)>-  On the contrary, based on my own experience, I find it is beneficial in helping clear those pesky, hormone induced pimples, whenever they arise.  Just a pin-size amount of serum, directly on the spot of a night, drastically reduces the severity of the pimple, come morning.  Therefore, this serum can readily pose as a substitute spot treatment, if need be. (*)
It doesn't absorb well into the skin on my palm, which stains

Granted I have continually used topical Vitamin C skin care products for three years now, the visible improvement to the condition of my skin has become increasingly more apparent.  The ASAP Vitamin C Serum has persisted in playing a vital role to the general well-being of my skin and in support of its ongoing recovery.  Prompting a natural radiance and better clarity, that signifies a healthy, luminous-looking complexion.  My once uneven skin tone is now uniform in colour, with a notable reduction in blotchiness and facial redness.  The surface texture is much softer and smoother, while my skin feels plumper and firmer.  It has also helped to lessen the appearance of the fine lines that were starting to form and so far, it is working wonders in deterring the formation of future lines and wrinkles too. yay  \:D/

Even after washing the stain remains on my palm :-O
Overall, I am grateful to be acquainted with the benefits of using topical Vitamin C and am satisfied that it is results-driven and decidedly lives up to its phenomenal claims. :-bd  The hard working ASAP Vitamin C Serum, repairs, prevents and protects against premature skin ageing.  While this particular serum isn’t quite my idea of perfect, it does what any good Vitamin C serum should, and that is to effectively promote the health of my skin.  It’s been a blessing in disguise, encouraging me to embrace the prospect of plausibly keeping my 37-year-old complexion looking younger for longer. (and longer and longer and longer, LOL :)) )

Even though I will soon have to kiss the ASAP Vitamin C Serum goodbye, :-h  permanently, I will certainly move on to a different variant that will continue catering for my mature skins ongoing needs. After witnessing a complete turnaround of my complexion, I doubt I will ever part ways with topical Vitamin C, always including it in some form or other as an important step in my daily skin care regime.  It’s an absolute immortal, that totally rocks! \:D/

Other Vitamin C products I have used

Tip:

*-:) Ideally, any blend of Vitamin C skin care products should be utilised as a step in your AM beauty regime.  This is because Vitamin C has the ability to enhance the effect of your sun protection product, providing a greater line of defence.  I apply it straight after cleansing and toning, but PRIOR to any other products.  You can still layer it with other skin care or treatment products, but these should always come AFTER the serum, ensuring you allow a few minutes for it to dry.  It’s worth remembering this method, because if other products are applied first, it’s possible they could interfere with the penetration of the Vitamin C to your skin. :-S

Last words:
Investing in a topical Vitamin C product is crucial for anyone who is serious about developing an effective anti-aging regime. :-B  Once in play, you can expect to notice visible improvements to the condition of your skin, within just weeks, while over time you can look forward to achieving even greater results. The best way to optimise skin health and generate a skin-rejuvenating effect that promises to deliver firm, youthful skin, is by means of topical Vitamin C.  =D> Have you started using a Vitamin C product in your skin care regime yet?  If so, do you prefer a serum, cream or other formulation? Please share any of your favourites.  If not, you should seriously consider joining me on the bandwagon & embarking on the journey that is heading directly to the fountain of youth!  :D  <:-P
